When the pandemic went into high gear, I was halfway through teaching a graduate seminar on American intelligence and foreign policy at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington. Overnight, faculty members and students had to figure out how to continue our courses online, with everyone stuck in place wherever they were. This involved crash courses on video programs like Zoom, Panopto, Microsoft Teams, WebEx, Skype – anything that would allow us to stay connected and move forward. And magic inevitably played a role – more below.
Restauranteur Magician Savino Recine on COVID My experience through COVID was different from a lot of other people—because I moved twice and, let me tell you, it was not easy. We are still going through the final phase . . . . but I had some time to think about magic and the way I’ve been […]

As we emerge from both lockdown and the worst of the pandemic (fingers crossed), I wanted to give you a behind the scenes look at what magicians in general, and our Washington Magic team in particular, have dealt with this past year and a half.
VIRTUAL ISN’T THE SAME
Probably the biggest difference was not having live audiences in the room. Magic is an intimate medium, and ideally must be experienced in person. Magic on TV is fine, but it just doesn’t have the same immediacy of something that happens in real time right in front of your eyes, even in your own hands. In this age of technology, live entertainment is the only thing that can compete with the magic that’s at our fingertips every day.
I’m so proud of my teacher Tony Clark fooling Penn and Teller on “Fool Us.” He does a tribute to his teacher Slydini……and since he taught me some of Slydini’s routines, that makes Slydini my teacher, too, and that makes me especially proud.
Watch this great clip—he will fool you and even more importantly touch you:

Now on Google Podcasts-Eric Henning and I discuss Washington Magic, and how corona virus is actually an incredible opportunity for you to shine with your magic.
Check out episode 6 featuring part two of my interview with The Wizard of Washington Eric Henning. He and I discuss Zoom shows, toilet paper, and Eugene Burger stories. It’s a must listen! #magicatdinner #washingtonmagic #zoommagic”

In addition to going to see a Washington Magic show, here are some other great DC tourist options.
2019 was a great year for Washington Magic! We have made out mark on the DC night life and here’s what people are saying on Yelp about our shows:
“Elegant evening of magic and wine!
The Arts Club of Washington is a hidden gem containing another hidden gem, the roughly-monthly Washington Magic show. Run by high/powered political consultant David Morey and retired DC restauranteur Savino Racine, the entire evening is an enchanting experience.
You’ll want to arrive early for drinks: the Club provides an excellent rotation of wines and cocktails. Drink in hand, enjoy the close-up magic for the 30 minutes before the show. Bring your drink with you into the salon, where the stage and sound system make every seat a good one.
Be prepared for visually stunning magic and mysterious mind-reading, served with lots of audience interaction and humor. The intimate Arts Club space is ideal for this type of entertainment; it feels like stepping back into a more elegant and refined time.
Our audience was a mix of A-list Washington power couples and young people, who were engaged in the show and enthusiastic afterwards. With many good restaurants nearby, Washington Magic makes a great date night, special occasion evening, or attraction for out-of-town guests. With fewer than 100 seats, this may soon become the toughest ticket to get in DC.
There are several inexpensive parking garages nearby, and the Arts Club is only two blocks from the Farragut West Metro (Red Line).”
